“beach” day

Andrew, Abigail and I joined some of Andrew’s friends from work Sunday at Ontario “Beach.”  I use quotation marks here because, as someone who grew up vacationing in Florida and North Carolina’s Outer Banks, I find it extremely difficult to call anything other than the sand along a bona fide ocean, a beach.  I mean, just because the Great Lakes are all huge and beach-like, they still aren’t oceans.  There are no waves, no crabs, no salty sea air.

I digress.

This is Ontario Beach.  As you can see, it is pretty much like a beach.  What you see on the right is a jetty and on the other side of that were a bunch of sailboats.  We didn’t have the best weather; it was pretty overcast much of the morning, but warm and even a bit humid (for here).  Ontario Beach is about an hour and a half northeast of East Aurora.  There are “beaches” closer to EA, but they’re on Lake Erie.

We were invited by one of Andrew’s friends from work, who apparently gathers with some of his family and friends here each summer for some (relatively) intense volleyball.

Andrew joined right in for the volleyball.

Abigail and I aren’t volleyballers; in fact, we’re the kind of players you want on the OTHER team.  So, Abigail did what she does best: laid out, soaking up the sun.  I enjoy lying out as well, especially since I have a sports bra and shorts tan, but I get bored easily if I’m not reading, so I mingled and took photos of Andrew playing volleyball.

Before too long some light rain drove us all inside, so we headed to this joint (apparently a favorite of the group who came out last summer) for some lunch:

I didn’t bring my camera (wish I had!), but it was just as shady on the inside as it looks on the outside.  They’re known for their steak sandwiches, but it was the bun that really did it for me.  Again, I wish I’d had the camera.  (There wouldn’t have been anywhere to put it; we were swished like sardines into booths.)  Anyway, imagine a really thin steak on a bun that was a cross between a potato roll and a croissant.  YUM.  It was a bit flaky and buttery and kinda smooshed when you grasped it.  I made mine into a cheeseburger with ketchup, mustard and pickles.  Andrew had his with grilled peppers and onions, and Abigail ate hers’ plain.  The three of us shared a vanilla milkshake with a splash of root beer.

Once we all finished lunch, we piled into our vehicles and headed to Andrew’s friend’s uncle’s house.  Hi Uncle Al!

Al has lived just off of Lake Ontario for the last 25 years.  He took the 11 of us out on the lake for tubing and water skiing for the next few hours.  The weather gradually improved until it was beautiful around 4 p.m. I haven’t been tubing for three years, since last vacationing with Andrew’s family on Lake Tippecanoe in Indiana.  I thought I was getting too old, but apparently not.  I had a great time yesterday and escaped without a bruise.

Bart, Andrew’s friend from work and who has made an appearance on the blog before, drove us up for the event. Thanks Bart!

After boating we gathered on the deck before grilling hamburgers for dinner.  Check out my suit!  This is the one Andrew and I scored last-minute at JC Penney’s.  LOVE IT.

Andrew lost his contact in the water…must have been all that aggressive tubing!  For those who don’t know, the only appropriate way to tube when there are multiple people out there at once, is to fight to the death until someone falls off.  You’d think adults would be past this; sadly, they aren’t.  (I, on the other hand, am completely content to have a wild ride in which I have to work to hang on, but don’t need to worry that someone from another tube might jump on top of me or kick me off.  Just saying.)

So THAT’S what my hair looks like from the back!  I’ve always wondered… It’s more reddish-brown than I thought.  And flippy.  Obviously, this is an “un-styled” look since I’d been in the water, but good to know.

We left around 8 p.m. for our long drive home.  Miraculously, no one in the car fell asleep!  I have heard, however, that everyone had a hard time getting going this morning…

Waldfest

Andrew and I went to Waldfest yesterday afternoon.  It’s a local German Festival just outside of East Aurora.  (All photos courtesy of Andrew, my hero with the camera, who graciously carried it around and got into picture-taking mode for me.)

A friend of Andrew’s from work invited us and we thought it would be a great time.  It was pretty warm here yesterday (upper 80’s), so we waited until about 4 p.m. to go.

It was packed, although not uncomfortably so.

We walked around, found the beer tent and got ourselves a couple Weissbiers.

And who can pass up bratwurst and mettwurst at a German Festival?

I like mine with sauerkraut and mustard.  (Excuse my nails; I’m in desperate need of a manicure!)

Kegs.

This is Bart, a friend of Andrew’s from work.  He had this awesome camera case that was actually a small backpack.  It’s now my mission to find one for us.  Maybe that’s what Kath uses to tote her camera around everywhere!  As you can see, it was warm.

Bart is also somewhat of a photographer.  I don’t know him that well yet, but this photo really captures, in my mind, who Bart is: a guy full of life, always with a huge grin and having the most fun possible.

This photo makes me look like I was drunk and double-fisting, neither of which would have been true.  I stuck to about a cup and a half but thought this was a great shot.

Our group tried to give this guy some beer but he dutifully waved them off; he was working the event.

Another fun shot…

I ponied-up four tickets (TWO DOLLARS!  Although I guess it could have been worse…) for a bottle of water.  Must. Alternate. Alcohol. With. Water.  Seriously, I really am responsible when I drink.  Not that we’re big drinkers; I just feel better (mentally and physically) if I’ve balanced out any alcohol I’ve consumed with big glasses of water.

This shot has a bit of a story…  This was the ice cream guy.  Bart (at this point shirtless because of a beer spill) managed to get a bunch of free ice creams for us.  I nabbed one of the strawberry fruit bars (love those!) and when I went to throw my trash away Andrew wanted to get a photo…  Don’t worry; we’re pretty sure he was more into Bart than me!

This guy walked by our group and stopped to chat:

There was music and dancing on the stage as well.

We had a great time but left before the bitter end.  We both love ethnic food outings, so we’re looking forward to upcoming Italian and Polish festivals as well.

they came, they saw, they ate pt. 2

Emily and Dan visited us this weekend.  I couldn’t bring myself to lug around Andrew’s huge camera (sad), so there are very few photos of our weekend (even more sad.)   Emily sent me a couple and we had a couple, taken in the room.

Guess I’ll just have to paint very good word pictures for you all…

We were blessed with INCREDIBLY good weather this weekend.  Picture blue skies, white fluffy clouds and high temps (high 70s to mid-80s).  They couldn’t have come on a better weekend.  In fact, our Ohio natives thought we’d been lying to them this whole time about how cool and comfortable it is here in the summer.

We had to start with the best Friday night: Pasquale’s pizza and wings (you can read more about it here).  We ate there and the pizza was a little greasy, but both Dan and Emily loved the wings.  We walked off some of our meal and then visited Abigail while she was working at Fowler’s.  Emily and Dan got to sample sponge candy and we sampled various flavors of ice cream before settling on our choices.  We went out for another walk through the village, pointing out cute houses here and there near Hamlin Park.

I awoke bright and early Saturday morning and was surprised that our guests were up at just about the same time–before 7 a.m.!  What is it about sleeping in an unfamiliar place that causes one to get up so early??

I went for a quick run, Emily did the elliptical and Dan ran on the treadmill.  If you noticed that Andrew was conspicuously absent from the line-up, he was.  He could have been found snoozing away in bed!

After our cardio session, Emily and I started up P90X yoga.  I’d never done yoga for more than an hour, so I knew this would be a workout.  Dan was a lifesaver and took Hadrian for a walk since he (the dog) was pretty much in the way no matter where he plopped himself.

Andrew did (finally!) get up and took Hadrian for a short run before we all got ready for the day.  We all, dog included, piled in the car and set off for East Aurora.  We left Hadrian in Andrew’s parents’ backyard and proceeded to downtown Buffalo to find a nice place to eat outside.

We chose an upscale (as in NOT your typical gyro place with neon signs in the windows) Greek place on Elmwood Ave. and were able to sit under an awning on their deck.  I got the Monsoon Chicken Salad; it was filled with coconut-crusted chicken strips, strawberries, mango slices, dried cranberries, banana chips and walnuts.  YUM.  Emily got a hummus and white bean platter with rice and grilled veggies that looked awesome.  It will definitely be somewhere Andrew and I will go again.

After lunch we headed across the border to Canada to see the falls.  We scouted out cheap parking ($4) and walked to Journey Behind the Falls, a tourist attraction that allows you to go down and behind the falls.  Andrew has always wanted to give it a try and so we figured now would be a great time.  Emily and I weren’t huge fans of the tunnels or crowds, but it was kinda neat to see how powerful the falls are up-close.  The worst part?  The mist (a.k.a. rain shower) you have to walk through to get in and out of the building that houses Journey Behind the Falls.  I DO NOT LIKE GETTING RAINED ON.  I don’t even like running in the rain.  I think it’s the sensation of cold water on my skin.  Here are some of Emily’s shots:

I love how Emily can pull of the “giant sunglasses” look.  I so cannot.  I will say, thought, that my weight-loss has caused my face to become more and more square (or maybe heart-shaped?) and less round.  Does that mean I get to buy new sunglasses to complement my face?  (Don’t answer that…)

Dan must have, by far, the longest arms EVER.  You can hardly tell they took this themselves (except for his arm in the shot, but you know what I mean).  And kudos for getting the rainbow in the background!

We spent a few relaxing minutes in the grass near the falls and bird/squirrel/people-watched.  Did you know they have black squirrels in Canada?

To continue taking advantage of the great weather, we ate in downtown Buffalo at the Pearl Street Grill & Brewery and enjoyed some cold beers and great good.  I was craving a burger and fries, so that’s exactly what I got.  Emily went light (or so she thought) and got the gouda soup, which was essentially drinkable beer cheese, but man, was it good!  Dan’s jerk chicken sandwich was a bit on the spicy side, so we promised him a strawberry milkshake to cool things down.  I enjoyed their seasonal blueberry beer and know Andrew and I will definitely be going back–the atmosphere and view were fantastic.  On a side note:  we’ve basically fallen in love with eating outdoors in nice weather, especially if we’re going out to eat.  Lately, we aren’t even interested in places without outdoor seating.  Does anyone else feel that way too?  (I think Europe has ruined us for indoor eating forever…)

About a gazillion calories later, we were on our way to pick Hadrian back up after indulging in sundaes from Antoinette’s.  They’re known for their sundaes and I couldn’t resist, even though my tummy told me to.

I went to bed early with a stomach ache and the others started watching our recent Netflix DVD: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.

Sunday morning we all got up and exercised again; Emily and I ran to the park (1.5 miles) while Andrew and Dan drove with Hadrian.  The three of them walked around the park while I did another two miles, then Dan, Emily and I ran back home.  We all jumped in the pool to cool down before getting ready for the day.

We ate blueberry pancakes (the best!) at Charlie’s Diner, toured Vidler’s Five & Dime and got drinks at Taste before we had to say goodbye to Emily and Dan.

We got back to the hotel and Andrew let out a loud gasp!  We’d been FISHED!

Long story short: Jen and Dave have this huge fish pillow (above) from goodness knows where.  Awhile ago, they, along with Emily and Dan, hid it in our bed at home in Ohio while they were all over watching a movie.  Ever since then, we’ve been trading it back and forth unbeknownst to the recipients.  Let’s just say I knew it was going to appear sometime this weekend–how could it not??

Guess we’re going to have to make a trip back to Ohio…
