house project: our closet dormer

Another scope of our project that seemed to drop on and off the architectural plans was the dormer and window in our master closet. It’s one of the things we first asked for when we met with the architect, and I’m so glad we kept it. Putting a window in ones’ closet seems likes such a small thing, but it has opened up the space so much already.

Hi Justin! (You can barely see our carpenter’s arm from inside our closet.) He’s ripping off the roof so they can bust through and even out the ceiling.

The closet is above the new kitchen addition, but doesn’t extend to the front of the house. (The workout room is the one that faces the road on the second story.) The existing dormer that you see above is our bedroom.

Ta-da!

The blue walls were the existing limits of the closet; you can see how one side was a gable roof. That was where a bar hung for my clothes, and because it hung on the gable there was A LOT of wasted space below and behind the hanging items. (You know me, I was as efficient as possible but it was so frustrating to climb under everything to get to bins of linens or off-season clothes.)

The closet ceiling was only seven feet high (!!!), which is pretty low. Unfortunately, all the ceilings on our second level are seven feet (gotta love older homes!), except our bedroom, which was an addition. Our closet must have been an original bedroom, and it was tiny and dark.

The window seems small, but it matches the other window in our room (that you can see in the top photo) and I think it looks very good from the outside of the house. We plan to paint the exterior wood trim of the window in our room black to match.

And check out that peaked roof! We were so surprised to see it was a full peak once our contractors tore into it. We’d always talked about trying to make the ceiling taller (it was SUCH a cave in there), but knew it would be a very messy and involved project with an uncertain return. Well, we certainly got a lot of return now!

And uncovering that peaked roof revealed a (pleasant) surprise…that’s what’s up next! (Hint: if you look carefully in the photo above, you might be able to figure it out!)

Our goal with the closet is to be able to fit our dressers in there and get them out of our bedroom. Now that we have a king bed, there isn’t as much floor space! (You’d think there would have been enough room to do that before, and technically there was, but with the way it was organized when we moved in, we would have had to reconfigure the space to put our dressers inside.) I’d love to ‘IKEA hack’ it with some inexpensive dressers and make them look built-in, but that will have to wait until after we move back in.
