house project: foundation

We finally broke ground! In the ‘overview’ post about our house project, I said our contractors had hoped to begin digging the new foundation right after the holidays. Well, January’s weather didn’t quite cooperate, so the front looked like this for three weeks straight:

No problem! Honestly, (and I told our contractors this, too), I’m just so thrilled the project has STARTED that I *almost* don’t even care how long it takes. Just before the end of January, the digging crew showed up!

It was cold and messy for sure. The crew (sub-contracted) dug the foundation for the front porch and steps, as well as the addition along the north side of our house.

The previous fall, I emptied out the side flower bed in anticipation of the digging. I left two oak leaf hydrangeas, thinking they were far enough out of the way, but I fear I was wrong. Oh well.

After they dug the trenches, they placed rebar and poured concrete before they left. We chose a trench pour to save some money; Andrew really wanted to do a full dig and make our basement bigger but it would have been much more expensive.

I took this photo from inside our dining room. We haven’t moved out yet, and I’ll be honest–it’s a little disconcerting to have people milling around outside your house all day. We’ll be moving out for the majority of this project, but many people do stay in their homes during renovations. I’m not sure how!

The concrete will take about a week to cure, and then our contractors will be back to begin demo on our porch!
