While I’m not normally one to use boxed mixes, I’d recently read a review praising the Ghirardelli cake mix and (clearly experiencing a craving for chocolate) decided to give it a try.
The Ghirardelli mixes come in Double, Dark and Milk varieties. The particular mix mentioned in the magazine was the Double, but as I haven’t been able to find that one, I decided to try the Dark.
Again, seeking convenience (that’s the kind of mood I was in), I started perusing the frosting containers. This one caught my eye, and after reading the (short) list of ingredients, I decided to give it a try. I loved that it has less sugar, too!
The finished product was quite tasty! Just as good as homemade, if I do say so myself. The mix also got positive feedback from Mrs. Nye, who is a seasoned from-scratch baker who doesn’t sugarcoat anything…except dessert.
The verdict: Ghirardelli cake mix is a great choice for anyone looking for a homemade-tasting treat and the convenience of a box. The Dollop frosting is perhaps the bigger superstar here, since achieving a high-quality, homemade frosting from a container is darn near impossible.
Next time you’re in a pinch, consider trying both of these gems!
