Marching in like a lion

I’m not sure we went out like a lamb (maybe a rabbit?), but March certainly felt BIG and LOUD. Lots of big things happening at the house, lots to keep us busy, and a week with our cousins here that was very LOUD.

Maelle got to take Mr. Snuggles, the class stuffy, home the first weekend in March. Despite being busy (if not a bit apathetic to Mr. Snuggles’ need for a detailed and photographed journal entry), I think we still managed to have a little fun with him.

Maelle continued her ice skating lessons at the rink here in East Aurora, and when they wrapped up early this month, we decided to sign up for the next session! This time, mama is joining Maelle on the ice to learn a few tricks–might as well! Maelle has passed Level 1 and 2 in her first two sessions, and really seems to enjoy it. Her favorite part is the ‘free skate’ time at the end, when mama can skate with her.

In mid-March, our cousins came to visit! The Johnsons came to stay at the Layers’ house for a week, and Maelle had so much fun. Her cousins, Nora and Hampton, were here every day, and cousin Emmett came back with Gram most days to join. (Older cousins Blake and Mason were in school.) It was loud and epically chaotic, but we survived and enjoyed the extra time we got to spend with Abigail and Marvin since we were all under one roof.

We even got to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with friends and family! The Saglime family joined us at the legion for a fish fry the Friay before St. Patty’s Day, and it was quite the festive event. I made green smoothies and served green bagels for breakfast, and had green jello for the kids. The Nyes joined us here that evening for Irish beef stew and bangers and mash. I also bought a couple books about Saint Patrick and the history of Saint Patrick’s Day, and I really enjoyed reading them to the kids. I’m looking forward to incorporating holidays into our homeschooling as we go forward.

The following weekend, Moog sponsored an event at the Albright Knox, now called the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, that we enjoyed immensely. Andrew had the brilliant idea to bring paper and pencils for Maelle, and she sat down to draw a picture. We also got snacks at their upscale café, which was fun. We’d definitely like to go back soon!

With Easter so early this year, we wrapped up March with some springtime activities! We finally made it to the Moog Easter Egg Hunt, which was a huge success. The coordinators really have it down, with segregated and enclosed areas for kids divided by ages, plus indoor activities and snacks. Maelle got her face painted, met Elsa and Anna from Frozen (!!!) and scored a pretty decent egg haul.

In all our busyness with the house and Easter just around the corner, I almost forgot to decorate our cookies! Maelle and I made quick work of a few bunnies and eggs with some assorted Easter sprinkles, and then gifted a plate full to our contractors.

Also, please note the colorful paper crosses taped to the windows behind Maelle. She made a stained-glass version at school, then wanted to decorate the rest of Gram and Grandpa’s windows ‘to make it look like a church.’ So, we spent an entire morning coloring them with colored pencils and she cut them out and taped them up. (Unfortunately, we went out of town a couple days later and they were gone when we returned.) I’m not sure why they were so meaningful to me–perhaps because we did them together–but I’m so glad they are in the background of this photo.
