October – a race, a field trip & and two beds

Maelle and I joined Andrew on a work trip to DC in early October, and while we were there, Andrew and I ran the Army Ten-Miler!

We trained all summer and were rewarded with a beautiful day for the race. Unfortunately, the charging cord for my Garmin watch died the night before the race (what are the odds?!), so I couldn’t track our pace or even log the run. We didn’t want to carry our phones, either, and I’ve never felt so naked in my life! No phone AND no watch! Thankfully, we were able to catch an Uber to the start with one of Andrew’s co-workers, and met up afterward to take the metro back.

Here’s Maelle at packet pick-up:

While Andrew and I were running, Maelle spent some time with Nana and Grandpa. She and Nana met Aunt Hannah and cousins Jack and Layne at Charlottesville for the afternoon! She loves being the oldest cousin.

Back in Alexandria, Maelle and I enjoyed everyone’s Halloween decorations and time at the playground.

The following week, Maelle went on her first school field trip! Her class visited a local farm. They saw some animals and played in the sand by a small pond.

Maelle got a new bed! I’ve started re-doing our office to turn it into a ‘homeschool room,’ (more on that later) and we needed to move our queen mattress out. We hadn’t anticipated putting it in her room as we didn’t want to take up too much floor space, but we tried it and it fit better than we thought. So, it can double as our guest room since there isn’t really room in the homeschool room for a bed.

Now we just need to buy her a new bed frame!

I also finally got to the bed along our driveway this month. I’ve been meaning to separate the iris by color–I painstakingly marked them with color-coded string this spring–and remove the tiger lilies completely. I need to get it done before our house project starts this winter! (MUCH more on that soon–it’s finally happening!)

It always amazes me how many plants come out of that bed each time I thin it out! I swear, both the iris and lilies multiply like rabbits. Faster, perhaps. I put back a row of the light purple iris along the house, and then moved the gold and maroon to a couple spots in the back landscaping. Hopefully, I’m rid of the tiger lilies for good! (We’ll see.)

Happy Fall!
