ALX in summer

We joined Andrew on a recent trip to Alexandria, and had a blast despite some rain.

We drove down on a Monday afternoon, and made a stop at Rita’s on the way! Maelle has only been twice, but she knows Mommy gets mango, and she gets gummy bears!

We’ve been trying to take the Monuments Water Taxi tour for the last few visits, and we finally did! (Usually Andrew’s schedule precludes us from going, or we’re visiting off-season when the boats don’t run.) The trip from Alexandria to Georgetown is about an hour, and you can see the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial from the boat. The captain photobombed us!

We hopped off at Georgetown to get lunch and walk around for a bit. Maelle caught a quick stroller nap before we hit a favorite playground!

We had some rain the following day, and were stuck in the hotel room while daddy worked and she and I did quiet activities, like reading or playing iPad games. She and I did, of course, visit 529 Kids, our favorite consignment store!

Perhaps the BEST part of the trip was when Nana and Grandpa took Maelle for TWO nights so we could go on some dates! Maelle got to make her own Hawaiian pizza and had ice cream for dessert!

Andrew and I went to Josephine’s, a fancy French restaurant, and I tried the fish with squid ink sauce. Other than the color, you’d never know!

The following day, Andrew’s in-person meeting fell through, so we had a little extra time together. (I don’t think we’ve had that much ‘unscheduled’ time since before Maelle was born! Major parent fail…) We got up early, took a run along the river, grabbed smoothies at South Block, and then he worked in the hotel room while I headed to the Carriage House for coffee and to read my book. It was glorious.

Afterward, we regrouped for a late lunch followed by a visit to an art museum! Andrew knows I love modern art, especially the impressionists, and The Phillips Collection is right in DC. The museum was founded in 1921, and is our nation’s first modern art museum. I enjoyed every minute.

Afterward, we attempted to walk to the White House, but it was cordoned off for an event, so we couldn’t get very close. Too bad, since I don’t think I’ve been up to see it since I was a kid. We did, however, get to see the Washington Monument and got QUITE a few steps in.

We ended our evening back in ALX with Greek food and an early bedtime, as we had to get up early the following morning to retrieve Maelle from my parents’ house. Nana made blueberry pancakes, and after breakfast, we were on our way home. It was a quick trip, but it’s always nice to visit our nation’s capital. I’m looking forward to bringing Maelle to see all the sights and museums as she gets older.
